Experienced Electricians Serving Brampton

Brampton has grown from a small town into one of Canada’s largest cities, and its homes cover that whole history: older houses around downtown, 1960s and ’70s homes in Bramalea and Peel Village, and the large subdivisions of Springdale, Fletcher’s Meadow, Castlemore and Mount Pleasant built from the 1990s on. We know what to expect in each, from small original panels to busy two-unit homes.

Why Choose Our Brampton Electricians

In Brampton, a lot of electrical work involves a second unit, a bigger service or both, and that work has to be permitted. As a licensed electrical contractor (ESA/ECRA #7016854), Murtex Electric files the ESA notification, schedules the inspection and deals with Alectra Utilities if your service changes, so you end up with the documents the City, your insurer or a future buyer will ask for.

Common Electrical Work in Brampton Homes

Legal basement units and two-unit homes

Second units are very common in Brampton, and the City requires a building permit to create one. The electrical work typically covers dedicated circuits for the unit’s own kitchen and laundry, its own subpanel, proper lighting, and smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are interconnected. We do the electrical portion, file the ESA permit and arrange the inspection, so the electrical side of your permit is properly documented.

Bramalea and Peel Village

Bramalea was one of Canada’s first planned satellite communities, and many of its semis, townhouses and bungalows date from the 1960s and ’70s. Nearby Peel Village is a little older. Some homes from this period have aluminium branch wiring, and many still have their original 100A panel. We check both and recommend repairs or a panel upgrade only where it is needed.

Newer subdivisions and growing loads

Homes built from the 1990s onward in Springdale, Fletcher’s Meadow, Castlemore and Mount Pleasant are newer, but some were built with a 100A service. Add a basement unit, air conditioning for two households, an EV or a hot tub and that service can run short. A load calculation tells us whether you need a 200A upgrade or whether an EV charger with load management will do.

Standby power

For homes with a basement unit, a sump pump or someone working from home, an outage affects more than one household. A Generac standby generator starts automatically when the power goes out and can run the essentials or the whole house. We size the unit, install the automatic transfer switch and file the ESA permit for the electrical work.

Alectra Utilities, Permits and Inspections

Brampton’s electricity is delivered by Alectra Utilities, which absorbed Hydro One Brampton in 2017. If your service has to be shut off at the meter for an upgrade or a new service, we book the disconnect with Alectra, file the ESA permit and schedule the inspection. Once ESA accepts the work, it sends Alectra the authorization to turn the power back on.

Questions we often hear from Brampton homeowners and landlords. If yours isn’t here, call (647) 529-2972.

Yes. We wire second units to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, including the circuits for a second kitchen and laundry, a subpanel if the layout calls for one, and interconnected smoke and CO alarms. We file the ESA permit and book the inspection, which supports your City of Brampton building permit.

Alectra Utilities. When your service needs to be disconnected and reconnected, for example during a 200A upgrade, we coordinate it with Alectra and ESA for you.

Not always. It depends on the size of the home, how both units are heated and cooled, and which appliances and chargers you run. We do a load calculation and recommend an upgrade only if the numbers call for it.

Yes. We install Generac standby generators, including the transfer switch and the electrical connection, and we take out the ESA permit for the work.
