Experienced Electricians Serving North York

North York packs a lot of different housing into one district: 1950s bungalows in Willowdale and Bathurst Manor, the mid-century homes of Don Mills, 1960s and ’70s houses in Bayview Woods and Parkwoods, big custom rebuilds on the old lots, and condo towers along Yonge Street. Each one is wired differently. We look at what your home actually has before we recommend anything, and we leave the work safe, tidy and to code.

Why Choose Our North York Electricians

Choosing an electrician in North York comes down to trust and paperwork. Murtex Electric is a licensed electrical contractor (ESA/ECRA #7016854). We file the ESA permit, book the inspection and coordinate any disconnect with Toronto Hydro, so the work is on record when you sell, refinance or renew your insurance. You get a clear written quote first, and our supply-and-install work carries a 3-year warranty.

Common Electrical Work in North York Homes

North York grew fast after the Second World War, then again when the condos went up along Yonge Street. That history shows up in the wiring.

Post-war bungalows on 60A and 100A service

Many of the bungalows built in Willowdale, Lansing, Bathurst Manor and Wilson Heights in the 1950s still run on 60-amp or 100-amp service with small panels. Add central air, an induction range, a heat pump or an EV and those panels run out of room. If breakers trip often or there are no spaces left, a 100A to 200A service upgrade is usually the clean fix.

Rebuilds and large additions

A lot of original bungalows, especially in Willowdale and around Bayview, have been replaced with much larger custom homes or opened up with big additions. These projects need a properly sized service, a load calculation, and early planning for heated floors, multiple HVAC units, lighting control and EV charging. It is far easier to lay this out before the drywall goes up.

Aluminium wiring in 1960s and '70s houses

Some North York homes built between the mid-1960s and the late 1970s were wired with aluminium branch circuits. Aluminium is not automatically unsafe, but connections can loosen and overheat at devices that are not rated for it. Warm switch plates, flickering lights or a faint burning smell are reasons to have it checked.

Condos and townhouses

In the towers around North York Centre and Sheppard, most electrical work happens inside the suite: pot lights, under-cabinet lighting, a dedicated circuit for a home office or a new kitchen layout. Condo work usually needs approval from management before we start, and an EV charger in a shared garage needs the board’s sign-off and a plan for billing the power.

Toronto Hydro, Permits and Inspections

North York’s local utility is Toronto Hydro, which absorbed the old North York Hydro after amalgamation. For a service upgrade we file the ESA permit and coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with Toronto Hydro. Once the Electrical Safety Authority inspects and accepts the work, it authorizes Toronto Hydro to restore the power. Smaller jobs, such as new circuits or pot lights, are filed with ESA too, so everything is on record.

North York Electrician FAQs

Questions North York homeowners and condo owners often ask us. Don’t see yours? Call us at (647) 529-2972.

North York is served by Toronto Hydro. For service upgrades we arrange the disconnect and reconnect with Toronto Hydro, file the ESA permit and book the inspection, so you don’t have to chase the paperwork.

Not always. We start with a load calculation based on what you have now and what you plan to add, such as central air, a heat pump or an EV charger. If the panel is full or the load is too high, we recommend a 200A service upgrade and explain why.

Often, yes, but the condo corporation has to approve it first. The board will usually want to know where the power comes from, how it will be metered and who pays for it. We can provide those technical details and do the installation once it is approved.

Yes. We handle new services, panels, lighting and EV-ready circuits for rebuilt homes and large additions, and we take out the ESA permit and arrange the inspections.

Yes. Our emergency line is open 24/7 across North York. Call (647) 529-2972 if you lose power, smell burning or see sparks, or if a breaker won’t stay on.
