Common Electrical Issues in Toronto Homes

Toronto has a lot of older housing, and older houses come with their own electrical problems. These are the issues we see most often:

Knob and tube wiring

Many homes built before about 1950, especially in neighbourhoods like the Annex, Leslieville, Riverdale and High Park, still have some knob and tube wiring in the walls and ceilings. It has no ground, the insulation gets brittle with age, and many insurers ask for it to be replaced. We can confirm what you have and plan a knob and tube replacement that keeps wall openings to a minimum.

60A and 100A electrical panels

Lots of Toronto houses still run on 60-amp or 100-amp service. That was fine decades ago, but central air, induction ranges, heat pumps, hot tubs and EV chargers can push an older panel past its limit. Breakers that trip often or a panel with no free spaces are signs it may be time for a panel or service upgrade.

Aluminium wiring

Some homes built in the 1960s and 1970s have aluminium branch wiring. It is not automatically dangerous, but connections can loosen and overheat over time, especially at devices that are not rated for aluminium. If you notice warm outlets or switches, flickering lights or a burning smell, have it checked. Read more about aluminum wiring repair and replacement.

Renovations, basement apartments and ESA permits

In Ontario, most electrical work has to be done by a licensed electrical contractor and filed with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). Renovations, basement suites and additions almost always need new circuits. We take out the ESA permit, do the work to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and arrange the inspection, so you have the paperwork when you sell, insure or rent out your home.

What Affects the Cost of Electrical Work in Toronto

Every job is priced individually, and you get a written quote before we start. The main things that affect the price are:

  • The type and size of the job: replacing a device is very different from adding circuits, upgrading a panel or rewiring a house.
  • The age of the house and its wiring: knob and tube, aluminium wiring or an undersized panel can change what is needed to do the work safely.
  • Access: plaster walls, finished basements and condo buildings take more care than open framing.
  • Permits and utility work: most jobs need an ESA permit, and service upgrades need coordination with Toronto Hydro.
  • Materials: the fixtures, chargers or equipment you choose.
  • Timing: emergency calls outside regular hours.

For larger jobs such as panel upgrades or rewiring, we assess on site or from photos first, so the quote reflects your home rather than a guess.
